The Debut, pronounced Deh-boo, is a unisex Filipino coming of age tradition that takes place when a young lady or gentleman turns 18. Typically, mothers and aunties will cook Filipino food such as lumpia and pansit, or celebrate the event at a restaurant. There is music and many times the young men or women will take dance lessons. The Debutante has a Cotillion Court which includes 9 boys and 9 girls. They dance to traditional music and waltzes. Two beautiful traditions refer to her age, 18. First is the 18 Rose Dance. During this dance, the debutante will dance with 18 men who will each offer her a rose. The second tradition is the 18 Candle Ceremony, wherein 18 ladies will ligt 18 candles to resemble the 18 points of ligt that will guide her in her transition to womanhood.
